Mount Vesuvius is mainly known for the dramatic eruption that in 79 a.d. destroyed Pompeii and other Roman cities, as reported by two letters from Pliny the Younger, who eye-witnessed the eruption while his uncle, Pliny the Elder, died because he got too close to the volcano to observe the eruption[1] .
